Webcasts and webinars are a great way to keep up with what is going on in an industry, including Purchasing. Make sure to tune in to the webcast being sponsored by Purchasing Magazine in reference to "How Best In Class Companies Achieve Spend Intelligence." The link has more information on the speakers and the agenda. The event is scheduled for Tuesday July 25 at 2:00 PM Eastern time.
A webcast really breaks up your day as well. It is like scheduling a meeting without the pressure! I encourage you to take advantage of attending webcasts whenever you can as they are both informative and relaxing. Your boss probably is not going to pay to send you to conferences on a regular basis, but you can still see, hear, and learn from conference presenters this way. The time spent is well worth it.
Another good use of webcasts and webinars is during the RFP process or during an exploratory phase. I've attended many online seminars to learn more about technology companies and their products. It's a painless way to see demos in action and meet salespeople.
Finally, webcasts and webinars are great as training tools for the Procurement department when new systems are being implemented. They allow you to learn from any trainer the company has available, cost nothing in travel plans and can be enjoyed from the comfort of your own desk without even having to book a conference room.
