
I just saw the title of an article on the McKinsey Quarterly website called Tired of Strategic Planning?
Admittedly, I have not read the article yet, nor do I know its content so my thoughts may not have anything to do with the article as I may be going off in another direction entirely. I loved that title so much that it inspired this entry.
Many Purchasing Departments are renaming themselves Strategic Sourcing these days, but does that have any meaning or is it just a nice buzz phrase?
Is there such a thing as too much strategy or strategic thinking? Yes, there definitely is - when that is all anybody wants to talk about or have meetings about and they forget that they are in the business of doing actual Sourcing, not just talking about it.
Some business moguls have written books talking about how they have to think years ahead in order for their businesses to survive. That sounds good in business literature and sales promotions, but is it true and is it accurate? Even if so, is it the whole story? No, of course that can't be the whole story. Strategy is all about the future, but the work we are doing takes place in the present and deserves its proper attention.
