Quick quiz: What do you think the price of a gallon of E-85 (alternative fuel comprised of 85 % ethanol and 15 % gasoline) is these days? Remember your guess and read on.
It's not only in my professional life in Purchasing that I look out for good pricing, it is also in my personal life. I am as outraged as the next person over these continuing high gas prices and I have not been shy about it. See Gas Prices Spike Again - WHY? and Gas At Under 1$ Per Gallon.)
Does a week go by these days when we don't read an article or hear a talk show host discussing alternate fuels and extolling the virtues thereof? Not only could we decrease reliance on foreign countries, but also save money. That's the promise, right? (In fact, I have been looking forward to alternative fuels since the day I read about them in elementary school science class. Apparently, somebody is a little late to the party since that was 20 years ago.)
Anyway, thanks to the ever-reliable Purchasing Magazine, I just came across this little bit of news: People in the Midwest are paying the same prices or very close prices for alternative ethanol fuels such as E-85 that they are paying for regular gasoline!
Once again, we must ask, how did this happen? How can this be? How is it going to get fixed? What about the promises?
