I received some information from the Environmental Protection Agency about a new tool that will be unveiled this week. You will undoubtedly be hearing more about this interesting program in the future.
Direct from the EPA:
EPEAT (Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool) identifies high-performance, environmentally friendly computer equipment through an online, searchable database which will be available to purchasers as well as the public on Monday, July 24th.
The database lists products that meet the tough new green computer
standard for desktop computers, laptops, and monitors. EPEAT is an
easy-to-use evaluation tool that allows the comparison and selection of electronic products based on environmental attributes, in addition to
cost and performance considerations. EPEAT-registered products meet
minimum performance standards in areas such as energy efficiency,
toxicity reduction and material selection.
EPEAT is already referenced in $31.6 billion worth of computer
contracts, including contracts issued by the Department of Defense,
Department of Homeland Security, NASA, the Commonwealth of
Massachusetts, and the City of San Jose, California.
You can get more information about EPEAT, as well purchaser resources at the EPEAT website.
