This entry deserves a sub-headline also: Better for the Environment Can Also Be Better for Your Wallet.
I recently returned from an extended vacation during which I stayed at four different hotels in both the United States and Canada. I was shocked (dismayed, outraged, and appalled too for my old friends EC and RW if you're reading this) to find the same thing in all four hotels.
What did I find that was so inappropriate purchasing-wise in all these places?
All four hotels had incandescent light bulbs instead of the much more efficient (four to six times - see this reference) fluorescent bulbs in their many fixtures in the rooms! In this day and age, I find that crazy.
I have been a proponent of fluorescent bulbs for years. In fact, my entire house is filled with fluorescent bulbs which means I greatly reduce my energy consumption which helps both the environment and my finances. (Fluorescents save 30 dollars in energy costs alone over the life of each bulb.) Plus, I have the added convenience of never having to replace a light bulb. Some of them are ten years old and still working.
The money those hotel chains are wasting on the physical bulbs, electricity, employee time (to order, distribute, and replace the bulbs) really adds up when one considers the scalability involved.
