The CPO Summit

I almost want to add an exclamation mark to the end of the title of this entry like this - The CPO Summit!  Just the title of the event continues to illustrate the ever-increasing visibility and importance that Purchasing Departments are obtaining in their companies.

The word "summit" brings to mind the meeting of heads of state.  So it is, corporate-wise anyway.  The Second Annual Chief Procurement Officer's Summit will be held November 16-17, 2006 in Boston and is co-sponsored by The Aberdeen Group and Purchasing MagazineRegistration information (including speakers and agenda topics) and forms are available here.

I would be interested in feedback from anyone who attended last year or who has attended similar industry events.

  • What did you learn?
  • Were there valuable networking opportunities?
  • What would you like to see covered at future events?

Return On Investment
Buyers hear the term "Return on Investment" quite often, especially when evaluating new software or products.  The concept is also important when disusing whether a company should switch vendors.  It has to be determined if the money saved will outweigh the time and resources... Continue Reading
Purchasing Case Studies
Case studies can be an effective form of advertising and persuasion when vendors include them in an RFP response.  How would you feel about offering your own company's experience as a case study for a vendor's marketing material? There can... Continue Reading

Are You Paying Too Much For Shipping?
With gas prices at record highs, Buyers cringe every time shipping invoices, reeking of fuel surcharges, arrive on their desks. What can be done? The old standby of comparison shopping (and maybe an RFP) would definitely be in order.  ... Continue Reading
Sourcing in China
Everywhere I look these days in the Procurement field, there is information about Sourcing in China. I almost wonder why it took us so long to get to this point of Buyers looking overseas directly. Clearly, our local US suppliers... Continue Reading

Making Buyers' (Customers') Lives Easier - Part 2
Wouldn't you think if a writer happens to offer free publicity on a business network by writing about a company in a blog, the company would make it easy on the writer to do so?  Even more so, wouldn't you expect someone... Continue Reading
Making Buyers' (Customers') Lives Easier - Part 1
Business writing gurus love to come up with slick summaries of complex ideas that can be presented in buzz-worthy phrases such as "Just follow the 80/20 rulle," or "Think outside the box," You can think of plenty of these quick-hit lines... Continue Reading
Puchasing Podcasts
Over the past six months or so, I've repeatedly seen references to all kinds of entertainment uses for podcasts.  Though podcasts are the cutting edge of technology, they are also a throwback in some ways to many years ago.  I find... Continue Reading
Getting Vendors To Do The Work
Buyers (and their bosses) often come up with good ideas to make processes or relationships go more smoothly, but the changes often result in work which is ironic, since the changes were supposed to make everything more efficient. A quick... Continue Reading
Smarter Purchasing Equals More Profit
This entry deserves a sub-headline also:  Better for the Environment Can Also Be Better for Your Wallet. I recently returned from an extended vacation during which I stayed at four different hotels in both the United States and Canada.  I... Continue Reading
