Paying for the Travel Perks

My readers know I like to read fellow KMM authors and give the Purchasing Perspective on some of their blog entries.

Today I want to welcome Greg Meintjies of Corporate Treat.  His new blog covers the ins and outs of being a luxury business traveler.

I know you will enjoy reading his entries and imagining yourself traveling in style.  As Greg mentions in his author profile, "You work hard and you deserve it! First class all the way!"

I might have to rain on the vacation, I mean business trip, just a bit.  Purchasing professionals, you know where I'm going with this...

Buyers responsible for travel services at their companies are cringing!  That's right.  They preach uniformity and following corporate standards which are usually described with terms such as "business like" and "adequate," not "first class!"

Travel is an extremely tough category to manage in a corporate Purchasing department.  After all, everyone feels they work hard and deserve the best, right?  It's tough to get them to realize that "the best" costs significantly more than "good enough."  Accordingly, Strategic Sourcing initiatives often target travel because there is so much potential savings in that category.

Another thing that makes managing travel so tough is that many senior executives travel.  They, of course, want "the best" accommodations too.  While, "good enough" may be just that for the rank and file, they want exceptions to policies for themselves.

Let's hear from some travel services Buyers out there...what are your tips and tricks for career sanity and survival in this category?
