Buyers responsible for travel services at their companies are cringing! That's right. They preach uniformity and following corporate standards which are usually described with terms such as "business like" and "adequate," not "first class!"
Travel is an extremely tough category to manage in a corporate Purchasing department. After all, everyone feels they work hard and deserve the best, right? It's tough to get them to realize that "the best" costs significantly more than "good enough." Accordingly, Strategic Sourcing initiatives often target travel because there is so much potential savings in that category.
Another thing that makes managing travel so tough is that many senior executives travel. They, of course, want "the best" accommodations too. While, "good enough" may be just that for the rank and file, they want exceptions to policies for themselves.
