When most people get their first jobs in Purchasing as Buying Assistants, they never imagine that Purchasing could end up helping them see the world. Indeed, sometimes it does just that.
Purchasing Departments these days often include the word "global" in their official titles for one (or both) of two reasons. Either the company itself has franchises or offices around the country and the world and/or the company has supply partners located around the country and the world.
Buyers make trips to introduce new Sourcing initiatives or new major vendors to the outlying locations. They also visit vendor factories and production plants for meetings or even just for industry education.
Another reason for Buyer travel is to attend trade shows. While Buyers of any commodity can learn important industry information and make valuable contacts at trade shows, retail Buyers are most likely to attend shows. They attend many per year in different geographical areas. Certain retail Buyers visit industry hot spots for their particular commodities. An example would be clothes Buyers that frequently visit New York.
Hang in there, Buying Assistants, you just may escape the three walls of those cubicles yet!
