Another aspect of your job affected by the Receiving Department is receiving accuracy. Unit of measure errors can be your worst enemy sometimes. If something is received as a quantity of one, but it should be a quantity of twelve that happen to be in that one box, there is going to be a severe shortage of items when customers try to place orders.
It will look like Purchasing did not order correctly if there aren't enough items to fill orders. Months later, when the problem is discovered and corrected in the computer, it will look like Purchasing over ordered when the shelves are bursting with Christmas items at St. Patrick's Day. Just imagine that this is all due to a simple error.
It's up to Purchasing to be proactive about this and inform Receiving about the variations in units of measure with different items. When problems or questions do arise, having a good relationship will get things resolved much more quickly and easily. It will also encourage the Receiving personnel to be more careful the next time. After all, who wants to disappoint their friends?
Buyers who keep their relationships with Receiving on a positive note will make their work lives easier and more pleasant.
