You've just been handed a new commodity at work. If you are new to managing this commodity, how do you find vendors to which you'll send the RFP's?
Here, in order, are the fastest ways to compile your list.
1) Look at the "Potential Vendor" file you've been savings for just such an occasion. All that sales literature that you receive daily finally has a purpose!
2) Look through the Purchasing Department records. RFP's from previous Sourcing rounds are retained, usually per company policy.
3) Talk to your colleagues. One or several will have experience from this job or a previous one with the commodity.
4) Call your Purchasing contacts at other companies and call your co-workers' Purchasing contacts at other companies.
5) Look online. You can use Search engines by entering the commodity name along with the name of your city or the nearest big city. You can also use the Thomas Register Online if you are looking for manufacturers.
Please share your suggestions to add to the list.
