So we've established that there are subtle differences in the various names your department might be called.
Here are the names in order of "flash."
Purchasing - sounds a little bland/common, probably the oldest name around, sounds very tactical and operational, makes you picture a Buying Assistant slaving away typing PO's
Procurement - sounds more formal/sophisticated/complicated like there are some methods being used, more professional, almost sounds more mystical since most people don't use the word "procure" as part of their active daily vocabulary
Sourcing - getting closer to the big time here, how does people "source" things, they wonder when they hear this term, sounds like people who "source" would need specialized skills or training
Strategic Sourcing - the hundred dollar name, adding in "strategic" really implies high level thinking, analysis, and an important plan for the company must be going on in that department
There you have it, that's what in a Purchasing/Procurement/Sourcing/Strategic Sourcing name!
