
How often has this idea come up at staff meeting? "What we should really do is have some people switch jobs for day from different departments, then they could see what we really go through all day!"
This is often said either as a joke or with sarcasm. However, I seriously propose all Purchasing professionals put this idea into action immediately upon reading this. Do it with enthusiasm. Cross-train for a day with for your colleagues in Receiving and Accounting because it will make your own job easier and more pleasant in several ways.
First, it's a great way to build rapport with members of the other departments. That alone could make it worth it. Let's face it, when do departments ever call on each other? Only when there is a problem. When I have a problem, I'd rather call a colleague who also happens to be a friend (or at least a friendly acquaintance) than a stranger who seems my name on the internal caller ID and knows I am calling with a problem.
