I was going to define stakeholder simply as someone in a company who is affected by the outcome of a particular decision. Then I found this definition that adds another layer. I like how they specify that the person can influence the outcome, but is not actually doing the work!
Doesn't that often describe Purchasing professional's challenges?
Knowing what one is up against is half the battle, though, right?
It is essential to get stakeholder buy-in throughout the sourcing process. In fact, the first step is making sure one has included, consulted, or apprised the proper stakeholders in the first place. Some may like the status quo and not even yet be supporting the idea of going through a sourcing exercise.
It is essential to keep them involved the whole time either by update meetings, e-mail summaries, or actually involving them in critiquing RFP's before issuance and evaluating vendor responses.
The more involved they are, the better it will be for everyone. It is up to the Buyer to lead the vendor selection team, of course, but every general needs supportive troops to win the battle!
