In the comments link above, I explain how some companies can't even qualify to get government contracts if they can't prove that a percentage of their own purchases are made from women and minority businesses. Obtaining this certification can open the door for small businesses to do business with large companies.
The certified companies are often referred to as WBE and MBE meaning Women-owned or Minority-owned Business Enterprises. Large companies have formal programs that calculate the amount of money spent with the different types. The figures are often reported to the press and used for PR purposes.
